INTERNATIONAL VIOLINMAKERS’ COMPETITION VIOLA’S 2009 |

AIM The aim of this Competition is to award several interesting violas according to their manufacturings, tones and sounds. JURY One President, four musicians, three instrument makers, one key figure. In the event of a tie in the voting, the President has a casting vote. Decisions are irrevocable. CONDITIONS For this first edition, these Competition will be open to the manufacturing of modern viola (no baroque). Candidates are free concerning the choice of strings, sizes of the instruments, models, finishes, copies of former instruments... Each candidate can only deposit one instrument. EXHIBIT OF AWARDED VIOLAS All the violas will be exhibited from Friday morning. Awarded violas will be distinct. MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS RECEIPTS AND SENDING BACK Violas must be send between October 1st to October 30th no later than midnight at the following address : BAROCO, Concours Viola’s 2009, 60 rue de Rome 75008 Paris FRANCE As the aim of this Competition is to exhibit violas in order to be seen and played, viola makers will leave those instruments until Sunday evening, after the exhibit. Forwarding charges are at viola makers’ expense. If not, violas will be stocked during one year (maximum) at the address above. After these twelve months the manager of this shop can offer these violas to associations. INSURANCE Each candidate must insure his own viola for the time of the competition. On receiving these violas, they will be stocked into a secured room until the exhibit whose entrance and exit will also be watched over. ANONYMITY Violas must be signed but this signature (handwritten, sticker, marks) must be hidden. Violas will appear in the Stages in an order fixed by drawing lots. The sequence of appearance in all Stages will be the same as in the First Stage. Numbers of appearance and names of makers will be kept secret until the end of the vote. SCHEDULE The Competition will be divided into three Stages: a. Stage I : Preselection b. Stage II : Each member of the jury will choose five violas according to different criteria : wood and sound qualities. All these violas will receive a certificate of merit. c. Exhibit : Violas will be displayed on Friday morning for the audience. d. Final Stage : On Friday afternoon violas will be performed by professional viola players, non-members of the jury, during the final stage. The sequence of appearance in all Stages will be the same as in the First Stage. The audience will elect his favourite. Members of the jury will vote separately. CELEBRATION It will be held on Saturday at 11.30 am. Each awarded viola will be performed during the concert of November 8th at 2.30 pm. Also a possibility to participate at the record of the CD “Les Inédits”. PRIZES Each member of the jury (viola makers, viola players, musicians, key figures) will choose five violas. These violas will be displayed at the exhibit and performed during the final stage. The audience will also vote. The maker of these violas will receive at least a certificate. Each member of the jury will also choose his favourite and will give him a Prize of his own name. “Prix luthier”, “Prix musicien”, “Prix du Public”, “Prix alto en ligne” of the First International Competition of Viola maker will be awarded. As there are no marks the subjectivity is not denied but the quality of the jury will not be questionable thanks to their CVs. REGISTRATION FEES Euros 50 (fifty) for each candidate.
